DIY Spoke Reflector

October 20th, 2008

CD as bicycle spoke reflectorI saw this gentleman, C, going out on Saturday night. I was taken with his style and particularly his DIY, extremely practical, spoke reflector, which he graciously allowed me to photograph. Initially I thought this would be a good use of any old archival CDs I have, but then I realized that it might not get scratched quickly enough and someone could make off with my data. So I think I’d follow C’s lead and only use CDs I find in the street. Hopefully there won’t be any major secrets on those!

C invited me, and all of you, to the Cambridge Bicycle Committee meetings, the second Wednesday of the month.

Finally, several encounters over the weekend have led me to the following observation, what do you think?
bike bicycle beard facial hair

I have cool facial hair…I ride bicycles…therefor your science is spot on!

Hahaha! Love your chart. But what do you consider to be “cool facial hair”? I usually see an overlap between advocacy and strange facial hair. For example, the randonneur facial hair, which can mean long, full beard with hearty mustache in addition. I don’t know that I find that to be cool. Amusing sideburns, on the other hand …

I will give “cool” status to long, very full beards – extra points if they’re white and the randonneur in question can fill in for Santa. Which makes me think – if ever there were a job that would call for the skills of a randonneur it would be Santa’s job – traveling through the night over long distances, putting bicycles together and tinkering all year… I wonder if Santa has a brevet series to get ready for 12/24?
